Stone mystery of Africa

A man of many days with hardly tore through the African bush. Blows of machetes made his way through the bushes . Suddenly emerged from these huge stone walls . Travelers did not realize that just became a discoverer of one of the most mysterious places in Africa – mining town called Big Zimbawe .

Wanderer named Adam Renders . For many days wandering among the bushes , so when I saw the walls , he hoped that eventually came to an inhabited settlement. His surprise quickly turned to disappointment : apparently no one lived here , and that for many centuries. The man gathered up the remnants of the forces and went on his way , and after a few days he reached the inhabited settlements . The year was 1867 .

Big Zimbawe still exerts a lasting impression on every visitor them . A huge wall of the city , with a height of 5 to 10 meters , is built from tailored to each flat stones , laid without any mortar. The complex scattered in different places building occupies an area of about 40 hectares. The largest of these is the so-called ” building elliptical ” , called the Temple or the Great Fence . This is perhaps the only city in the world , in which the plan is not a single straight line. The wall runs along curves , as if mimicking the natural dumping ground stones. The riddle is already the name of the city. According to some , Zimbawe derived from the phrase dzimba spends mabwe meaning in the language currently living in the area Shona tribe ” stone houses ” . According to others , the name is derived from the term dzimba woje and means “house leader” . The local people called in this way one of the objects of the complex. Only later did the white stretched it to all buildings .

Renders perhaps was not the first European to see the Grand Zimbawe . It is believed that the oldest mention of the town date from the sixteenth -century Portuguese relations , who wrote about a place called Symbaoe , situated deep in the African country of King Monomotapa . Although his description of the part corresponding to the Great Zimbawe , but also includes elements to it not quite match , for example, information about the inscriptions in an unknown language , carved on the walls . Unfortunately, in the ruins of the Great Zimbawe not discovered such inscriptions. Perhaps it was about some other , hitherto undiscovered city.

Another mystery is the answer to the question of who built the Great Zimbawe . Residents of the city of stone were great builders , but apparently did not know how to write. Not left behind any information that would identify them. The researchers found only a ” silent ” stones and some everyday objects. Such a state of affairs was largely due to the working methods of nineteenth-century archaeologists. The study consisted often digging a place in search of something extraordinary , and ordinary , ” uninteresting ” items were just thrown . As a result, many questions can no longer respond.

The first ” suspicious ” about the elevation of the Great Zimbawe were : Father John – King of the exotic countries of the medieval legend and well-known in the Bible , King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba . The last version was widely accepted in the nineteenth century. The story of King Solomon’s mines , which have had huge amounts of gold , fueled the imagination of contemporary travelers. The desire to find them was probably caused not only by curiosity , but also – and perhaps primarily – the dream of catching up with the richness of the biblical king.

For seekers of African land of gold belonged German geologist Karl Mauch . When I accidentally heard from Renders of stone town , I immediately recognized it as a kind of treasure , which was stored mined gold . So he set out on the road . Although gold is not found , but gained fame ( not entirely deserved ) discoverer of the Great Zimbawe . Incidentally, the theory of the city as a great stone vault came back in the second half of the twentieth century , except that they had to use the Arab traders . Today, no one takes her seriously.

At the turn of the century , a number of theories about the creators of the Grand Zimbawe . However, they say more about contemporary racial prejudices than about the history of the city. Stone walls have to rise , inter alia, the Phoenicians , Arabs, Egyptians lost Roman legion – not only local , black it people . Not allowed thinks that ” primitive ” blacks could build something more than a simple huts made of clay and reeds . It was not until after World War II , the result of modern methods of research , it was found that none of these theories can not be true , because the stone city was founded relatively late, at the time of the European Middle Ages . Construction works started between age VI and VIII , lasted until the beginning of the fifteenth century. Soon after, the town was deserted . Even before World War II, the British archaeologist Gertrude Caton- Thompson stated that the vessel and found objects are similar to those used in the area so far , so the inhabitants of the Great Zimbawe have come from these sites. It is worth noting that the expedition was the first in the history of archaeological research expedition in which only women were involved .

You can determine approximately when the Big Zimbawe has been built , it is speculated who could build it, it is not known , however, that was to serve . Fall of the Stone City is another riddle . It experienced a long , perhaps even millennial period of continuous development , and in just a few decades was abandoned and fell into disrepair. I still do not know why this happened. In the ruins there are no traces of wars, disasters and epidemics. Peter Garlake refers to the old king applications for Monomotapa, according to which his people had to leave the original seat due to lack of salt. But this is only one of the possible hypotheses. Perhaps as a result of drought dried up the wells ? It may have changed trade routes and residents simply do not have something to keep ? Maybe some inexplicable natural phenomenon considered it a sign from the gods instructing leave the city ? Is once we find out what really happened ?
