What it is
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs (Utrikesdepartementet) is the Swedish government department responsible for foreign policy, international development cooperation, and foreign trade. Together with Sweden's overseas embassies and consulates, it constitutes the Swedish Foreign Service to promote national interests, security, and human rights abroad. Originating in 1791 when King Gustav III established the King's Cabinet for Foreign Correspondence, the institution was formally restructured into its modern ministerial form during the government reforms of 1840.
