What it is
The United Nations Security Council is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, charged with maintaining international peace and security under the UN Charter. In relation to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BA), it oversees the post-war peace architecture and regularly authorizes the mandate for international stabilization forces, such as EUFOR Operation Althea. Historically, the Council held its first session in London in 1946, and during the 1990s Bosnian War, it passed pivotal resolutions establishing UN 'safe areas' and creating the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
