What it is
The Riigikogu is the unicameral parliament of the Republic of Estonia, exercising legislative power, passing the national budget, and supervising executive authority. It is also responsible for appointing senior state officials and electing the President of the Republic. Tracing its origins to the Estonian Constituent Assembly convened in 1919, the first official Riigikogu assembled in 1920 before being suspended under Soviet occupation and restored following independence in 1992.
