What it is

The Department of Justice is a principal department of the Government of Ireland responsible for public safety, national security, immigration, and the administration of justice. It oversees key law enforcement and legal bodies, including the national police force (Garda Síochána), the Courts Service, and the Irish Prison Service. Originally established in 1919 as the Ministry of Home Affairs by the revolutionary First Dáil, with Michael Collins briefly serving as its first minister, it was reconstituted under its current name in 1924.
