What it is
The Department of the Taoiseach is the central government department of Ireland that directly supports the Taoiseach (the Irish prime minister) and the Cabinet. Its primary mandate is to coordinate government business, monitor the implementation of national policies, and steer strategic priorities such as Northern Ireland relations, European Union policy, and national security. It was established in 1937 under the Constitution of Ireland to replace the previous Department of the President of the Executive Council, which had operated since the foundation of the Irish Free State in 1922.
