What it is

The President of Ireland (Uachtarán na hÉireann) is the ceremonial head of state of Ireland and the supreme commander of the Irish Defence Forces. While the office is largely representative, the President holds constitutional reserve powers, notably the discretion to refer parliamentary bills to the Supreme Court for constitutional review before signing them into law. Established under the Constitution of Ireland in 1937, the position was first assumed by Douglas Hyde in 1938 and later marked a milestone in 1990 with the election of Mary Robinson as the state's first female president.
