What it is
The Ministry of Energy (Energidepartementet) is a government ministry in Norway responsible for formulating national energy policy and managing the country's vast energy resources. Its mandate encompasses overseeing oil and gas production, hydropower, electrical grid infrastructure, and renewable energy transitions to ensure security of supply and sustainable economic value. It was originally established in 1978 to oversee the expanding North Sea petroleum sector, and on January 1, 2024, it officially changed its name from the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy to reflect a broader focus on the overall energy transition.
