What it is

The Norwegian Coast Guard (Kystvakten) is a specialized maritime force operating as part of the Royal Norwegian Navy. Its primary mandate encompasses maritime surveillance, sovereignty enforcement, fisheries inspection, customs assistance, and search and rescue operations across Norway's vast territorial waters and exclusive economic zone. Established on April 1, 1977, following the creation of Norway's 200-nautical-mile economic zone, it modernized and absorbed the duties of the earlier Fisheries Surveillance Service that dated back to 1908.
