What it is

The Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Serbia (Ministarstvo finansija Republike Srbije) is the central cabinet-level department responsible for the nation's public finances and macroeconomic policy. Its mandate includes preparing and executing the state budget, formulating tax, customs, and fiscal policies, managing public debt, and overseeing the Treasury and Tax Administration. Tracing its origins to 1811 when the Governing Council of Revolutionary Serbia established the first finance department (Popečiteljstvo finansija) headed by Sima Marković, the ministry was reconstituted in its modern democratic form in 1991 following the introduction of the multi-party system.
