The President of the Republic of Serbia is the head of state of Serbia, representing the nation domestically and abroad and serving as the commander-in-chief of the Serbian Armed Forces. Operating within a parliamentary framework, the president is directly elected for a five-year term to carry out primarily representational and ceremonial duties, which include promulgating laws and nominating prime ministerial candidates to parliament. The office was formally established on January 11, 1991, succeeding the collective presidency of the socialist era, with Slobodan Milošević serving as its inaugural holder.
