Prosecutor General's Officejudiciary

Ukraine · founded 1991

What it is

The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine is the central authority directing the country's unified prosecution system within the constitutional framework of justice. It is responsible for guiding pre-trial criminal investigations, representing the public prosecution in court, and protecting state interests in exceptional legal cases. Tracing its roots back to the justice institutions of the Ukrainian People's Republic in 1918, the modern office was formally established on November 5, 1991, following Ukraine's independence. Major constitutional and institutional reforms enacted between 2016 and 2020 stripped the office of Soviet-era general oversight powers and realigned it with European standards.
