What it is
The European Commission is the politically independent executive branch of the European Union, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. It is responsible for proposing new EU legislation, implementing common policies and the budget, and enforcing European law as the 'guardian of the treaties'. Tracing its origins to the 1952 High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community, it was established in its modern institutional framework in 1958 under the Treaty of Rome.
