What it is
The Electoral Commission (Te Kaitiaki Take Kōwhiri) is an independent Crown entity responsible for administering parliamentary elections and referendums in New Zealand. It is mandated to maintain electoral rolls, promote public awareness and participation, register political parties, and allocate broadcasting time and funds. Originally created under the Electoral Act 1993, it was significantly restructured in 2010 when it merged with the Chief Electoral Office to centralize national election administration.
