What it is
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is the government agency responsible for managing the country's visa processing and border security systems as a core branch of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Its mandate is to facilitate legitimate travel, skilled migration, and refugee resettlement while enforcing immigration compliance and protecting New Zealand's borders. Tracing its organizational origins back to the formal establishment of the Immigration Department in 1912, it previously operated for decades as the New Zealand Immigration Service within the Department of Labour before being restructured under its current identity in 2004.
