What it is
The Ministry of Education (Te Tāhuhu o Te Mātauranga) is New Zealand's public service department responsible for overseeing the national education system. Its mandate includes shaping education policy, setting national curriculum standards, allocating public funding, and administering learning support across early childhood, schooling, and tertiary sectors. It was established in 1989 following the 'Tomorrow's Schools' public sector reforms, which replaced the centralized Department of Education and devolved operational school governance to locally elected boards of trustees.
