What it is
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (Te Pūtea Matua) is the nation's central bank, responsible for formulating monetary policy to maintain price stability and promoting a sound and efficient financial system. Established by legislation passed in 1933, it officially commenced operations on August 1, 1934, and was nationalized into full state ownership in 1936. Through the landmark Reserve Bank of New Zealand Act 1989, it pioneered operational central bank independence and became the world's first institution to adopt an explicit inflation-targeting regime.
