What it is
The Central Prisons Department is the government agency responsible for managing the correctional system and penitentiary facilities in Cyprus under the Ministry of Justice and Public Order. Its primary mandate is to ensure the safe custody, humane treatment, and rehabilitation of remanded detainees and convicted prisoners. Established in 1894 under British colonial rule, the central facility notably held anti-colonial EOKA fighters during the 1950s liberation struggle and contains the historic Imprisoned Graves memorial site.
