What it is
The Cyprus Police is the national law enforcement agency of the Republic of Cyprus, operating under the Ministry of Justice and Public Order. It is responsible for maintaining public order, preventing and investigating crime, and safeguarding citizens and property across the island. Tracing its roots back to the British colonial Cyprus Military Police established in 1879, the service was formally established upon the republic's independence in 1960 and unified into a single force in 1964 following the merger of the municipal police and rural gendarmerie.
