What it is

The Ministry of Justice of Finland (Oikeusministeriö) is a cabinet-level government department responsible for upholding the legal order, protecting citizens' fundamental rights, and maintaining the nation's judicial infrastructure. It oversees the drafting of key legislation in constitutional, civil, and criminal law, as well as the administration of the court system, the prosecution service, and prison facilities. Established in 1918 following Finland's independence, it originated from the judicial department of the Senate of Finland formed during the Grand Duchy era in 1809.
