What it is

The Ministry of the Interior (Sisäministeriö) is a Finnish government department tasked with overseeing internal security, police operations, border management, rescue services, and immigration policy. Established in 1917 around Finland's declaration of independence, it was formally designated as a ministry in 1918 to safeguard civil order in the early post-independence era. During the Winter War and the Second World War, the ministry carried the vital operational responsibility of directing civilian air defense and managing nationwide civilian evacuation logistics.
