What it is
The Ministry of Justice is a cabinet-level department of the French government responsible for administering the court system, overseeing prison administration, and drafting civil and criminal legislation. Headed by the Minister of Justice, who historically holds the title of Keeper of the Seals, it ensures the proper functioning and independence of judicial services. The modern ministry was established in 1791 during the French Revolution, evolving from the medieval office of the Chancellor of France.
