What it is
The Ministry of the Interior is a cabinet-level department of the Government of France responsible for internal security, civil protection, territorial administration, and immigration. Its core mandate includes overseeing the National Police and National Gendarmerie, organizing elections, and coordinating domestic disaster response. Established on August 7, 1790, during the French Revolution, it originally managed a vast portfolio including trade, public education, and public works before those were spun off into dedicated ministries. Since 1861, it has been headquartered at the Hôtel de Beauvau in Paris, often referred to simply as Place Beauvau.
