What it is
The Prefecture of Ardèche serves as the executive headquarters of the French state's representative (the prefect) in the Ardèche department, located in its administrative capital of Privas. Its mandate encompasses upholding public order, coordinating emergency services, enforcing national legislation, and managing local administrative services. Established during the French Revolution in 1790 and institutionalized under the Consulate in 1800, its administrative seat is housed in a historic 18th-century private mansion originally built by the final Baron of Privas.
