What it is

The Prime Minister's Office in France, based at the Hôtel de Matignon, serves as the administrative and executive apparatus supporting the head of government. It is tasked with directing government action, coordinating interministerial policy, and overseeing the implementation of national legislation. Established in its modern constitutional form under the Fifth Republic Constitution of 1958, the office succeeded the earlier President of the Council of Ministers, with Michel Debré serving as its first modern Prime Minister in 1959.
