What it is
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy is a supreme federal authority of Germany responsible for national economic policy, competitiveness, energy transition, and industry regulation. Originally established in 1917 as the Reich Economic Office and re-established in post-war West Germany in 1949, it was famously shaped by its first minister, Ludwig Erhard, the architect of Germany's social market economy. In 2021, the institution expanded its core portfolio and was renamed the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.
