Federal Ministry of FinanceGovernment

Germany

What it is

The Federal Ministry of Finance (Bundesministerium der Finanzen, BMF) is a supreme federal authority in Germany responsible for the nation's public finances, budgetary policy, taxation, and financial market regulation. Its mandate includes preparing the federal budget, shaping domestic fiscal policy, coordinating financial legislation, and representing Germany's economic interests within European Union institutions such as the Eurogroup. Tracing its lineage to the Imperial Treasury (Reichsschatzamt) founded in 1879 and the Weimar-era Reichsfinanzministerium, the ministry was officially re-established in post-war West Germany in 1949 before moving its primary headquarters to the historic Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus in Berlin following reunification.
