What it is

The Hellenic Navy is the naval branch of the Hellenic Armed Forces, tasked with defending Greek sovereignty across territorial waters, securing maritime routes, and projecting naval power in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. While rooted in ancient seafaring traditions, the modern navy traces its origins to 1828 during the Greek War of Independence. A defining milestone was its decisive dominance under Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis aboard the flagship Georgios Averof during the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, which effectively liberated the Aegean islands.
