What it is
The Presidency of the Hellenic Republic is the office of the head of state of Greece, serving as the supreme representative of the nation and the guarantor of the constitution. Operating within a parliamentary democracy, the President holds a largely ceremonial role, carrying out duties such as formally appointing the Prime Minister, promulgating laws, and representing the state abroad. The modern institution was established in 1974 following the collapse of the military dictatorship and a subsequent national referendum that abolished the monarchy to establish the Third Hellenic Republic.
