What it is
Althingi is the national parliament of Iceland, serving as the country's unicameral supreme legislative authority responsible for enacting laws, passing the national budget, and holding the government accountable. Founded in 930 AD at Thingvellir, it is widely recognized as one of the oldest extant parliamentary institutions in the world. Although suspended in 1799, it was formally re-established in Reykjavík in 1845 as a modern consultative body before regaining legislative powers.
