What it is
The Icelandic Confederation of Labour (Alþýðusamband Íslands, ASÍ) is the largest central trade union federation in Iceland, representing roughly half of the country's workforce. It coordinates policies across affiliated unions, negotiates collective agreements, and advocates for workers' rights, safety, and social welfare in tripartite cooperation with employers and the state. Founded in 1916 alongside the Social Democratic Party before later separating into an independent union confederation, it played a pivotal role in securing Iceland's landmark 1938 Trade Union Act.
