What it is
Landsvirkjun (the National Power Company of Iceland) is the state-owned energy company of Iceland and the country's largest electricity generator, producing roughly 70% of the nation's electric power entirely from renewable sources. Its commercial mandate is to generate, transmit, and trade wholesale electricity derived from hydroelectric and geothermal power plants to supply national households, businesses, and energy-intensive industries such as aluminum smelters and data centers. Established on July 1, 1965, jointly by the Government of Iceland and the City of Reykjavík to build the Búrfell hydropower station, it became wholly owned by the Icelandic state in 2007 following the buyout of municipal shares.
