What it is
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is the cabinet-level government agency responsible for managing Iceland's external relations, international trade, development cooperation, and consular services. Following the German occupation of Denmark in April 1940, the Althing assumed full control of Iceland's foreign affairs, and the ministry was formally established by law in November 1941. In its early years, the ministry steered Iceland's integration into the postwar international community, including joining the United Nations in 1946 and becoming a founding member of NATO in 1949.
