What it is
The Ministry of Health (Heilbrigðisráðuneytið) is a cabinet-level government department in Iceland responsible for public health policy, healthcare services, and health insurance administration. It oversees healthcare institutions and works to ensure universal access to high-quality medical care across the country. Health was first established as a dedicated ministerial portfolio in 1959 before the department formally became a distinct administrative ministry in 1970. After being merged into a broader Ministry of Welfare in 2011, it was later reconstituted as an independent ministry in 2017.
