What it is
The Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate (Umhverfis-, orku- og loftslagsráðuneytið) is a cabinet-level executive department of the Government of Iceland. Its mandate is to lead national climate action, oversee nature conservation and environmental protection, manage waste and water systems, and administer Iceland's abundant renewable energy and geological resources. While environmental governance at the cabinet level began with the establishment of the Ministry for the Environment on February 23, 1990, the department was formally restructured into its present portfolio on November 28, 2021, by integrating energy affairs from the Ministry of Industries and Innovation.
