Office of the President of Icelandgovernment
Iceland · founded 1944
What it is
The Office of the President of Iceland is the institution serving the nation's head of state and representing the country internationally. While the presidency functions primarily as a ceremonial symbol of national unity, the office retains constitutional powers including government formation oversight and the ability to refer parliamentary legislation to a public referendum. Established on June 17, 1944, upon the founding of the republic, the office made global history in 1980 with the election of Vigdís Finnbogadóttir as the world's first democratically elected female head of state.
