What it is
Reykjavík City Council (Borgarstjórn Reykjavíkur) is the supreme governing and legislative body of Iceland's capital municipality. It oversees the city's administration, sets local policies, approves municipal budgets, and appoints the mayor and executive committee. The first elections to the council were held in 1836 when Reykjavík was establishing local self-governance under Danish rule, and in 1908 the council established the modern office of the mayor.
