What it is
The Lithuanian Writers' Union is a non-governmental professional association representing Lithuanian poets, prose writers, playwrights, translators, and literary scholars. Its mandate is to defend the creative, legal, and social interests of authors, promote Lithuanian literature domestically and abroad, and organize major literary events such as the annual international Poetry Spring festival. Tracing its origins to the Union of Lithuanian Writers and Journalists formed in 1922 and the Lithuanian Writers' Association established in 1932, the organization was subordinated to Soviet control during the occupation before re-establishing its full independence in 1989.
