What it is

The LRT Council (LRT taryba) is the highest governing and supervisory body of Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT), the country's public broadcaster. Mandated to represent the public interest and safeguard editorial independence, the twelve-member council approves LRT's strategy and budget, monitors programming standards, and appoints the Director General. It was established in 1996 under the Law on the Lithuanian National Radio and Television, succeeding the earlier broadcasting board created in 1990 following Lithuania's restored independence.
