What it is
The Office of the President of the Republic of Lithuania is the state institution that supports the head of state in carrying out constitutional duties, primarily representing the nation in foreign affairs, serving as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and overseeing governance alongside the Seimas and Government. Originally established in 1919 when Antanas Smetona was elected the country's first president, the institution functioned in the interwar temporary capital of Kaunas until the 1940 Soviet occupation. Following Lithuania's restoration of independence, the modern presidency was officially re-established under the 1992 Constitution.
