What it is
The State Border Guard Service (Valstybės sienos apsaugos tarnyba, VSAT) is a specialized law enforcement agency under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania. Its primary mandate is to protect and control national land and maritime borders, regulate border crossing points, and secure the external border of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Tracing its historical origins to Lithuania's first border regiment formed in 1920, the service was reconstituted in 1990 following the restoration of independence, later assuming its current structure and designation in 2001.
