What it is
The House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) is the primary legislative chamber and lower house of the bicameral Parliament of the Netherlands. Composed of 150 members directly elected via proportional representation, it exercises the core legislative mandate to propose, debate, amend, and pass national legislation while scrutinizing the executive government. Established under the Constitution of 1815, the body was fundamentally transformed into a directly elected democratic assembly following Johan Rudolf Thorbecke's constitutional revision of 1848.
