What it is
The Municipality of Ameland is a local government body administering the Frisian Wadden Sea island of Ameland in the northern Netherlands. Its mandate encompasses municipal governance, coastal infrastructure management, public services, and environmental protection across its four main villages. Historically, Ameland operated as an independent 'Free Lordship' (Vrije Heerlijkheid) for centuries before being formally annexed into the Batavian Republic in 1801.
