What it is

The Rent Tribunal (Huurcommissie) is an independent Dutch government agency (zelfstandig bestuursorgaan) that serves as an accessible, impartial dispute resolution body for tenants and landlords. Its mandate is to mediate and issue binding rulings on residential rent prices, annual rent increases, maintenance defects, and service charges without requiring formal court proceedings. First established under the Huurcommissiewet of 1917 as emergency municipal committees to curb wartime rent gouging, the regional bodies were formally consolidated into a single national organization in 2010.
