What it is
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Ministerul Afacerilor Externe) is the central public administration body in Romania responsible for implementing foreign policy and managing diplomatic relations. It oversees Romania's diplomatic missions and consular network abroad while advancing the country's interests in bilateral and multilateral forums. Officially established in 1862 under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza following the unification of Wallachia and Moldavia, its early mission focused on securing international recognition of the new state. In the post-communist era, the ministry played a central role in guiding Romania toward membership in NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007.
