Romania

What it is

The Prefecture of Bistrița-Năsăud County is a territorial public administration body representing the Romanian Government at the local county level. Led by a government-appointed prefect, its mandate includes supervising the legality of acts issued by local authorities, coordinating decentralized national agencies, issuing passports and driving licenses, and leading county emergency response committees. The modern prefect system in Romania traces its origins to the administrative unification reforms of 1864 under Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, while Bistrița-Năsăud County in its current administrative form was re-established during the national territorial reform of 1968.
