What it is
The Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation (Minenergo) is a federal executive body responsible for drafting and implementing state policy and legal regulation in the national fuel and energy complex. Its mandate encompasses oversight of the oil, gas, coal, peat, electricity, and renewable energy sectors, as well as the operation of major pipeline transport networks. Tracing its lineage back to the Soviet-era Ministry of Energy and Electrification, the modern ministry was formally re-established as an independent entity in May 2008 when the Ministry of Industry and Energy was split.
