What it is
The Air and Space Army (Ejército del Aire y del Espacio) is the aerial and aerospace warfare branch of the Spanish Armed Forces, operating under the Ministry of Defence. Its mandate is to defend Spain's airspace and territorial integrity, control sovereign air traffic, support civil protection, and conduct aerospace surveillance. Tracing its roots to the creation of the Military Aeronautics service in 1913, it was formally established as an independent military branch on October 7, 1939, following the Spanish Civil War. In 2022, it was renamed from the Spanish Air Force to incorporate space operations and surveillance into its core mission.
