What it is
The Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) is Spain's national gendarmerie force with military status, operating under the authority of both the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Defence. It is primarily tasked with law enforcement, public order, and rural policing, alongside specialized duties such as border control, counter-terrorism, and traffic management. Founded in 1844 by the 2nd Duke of Ahumada during the reign of Queen Isabella II to combat rural banditry, it is Spain's oldest national law enforcement agency.
