What it is
The Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport is one of the seven executive departments of the Swiss federal government, headed by a Federal Councillor. It is responsible for national security policy, overseeing territorial military defense through the Swiss Armed Forces, coordinating civil protection and disaster response, directing the Federal Intelligence Service, and promoting nationwide athletics. Originally established as the Federal Military Department upon the founding of the modern Swiss federal state in 1848, it was reorganized and renamed in 1998 to reflect a modernized security framework integrating sport and population protection.
